Shoulder Injuries

Are You Experiencing Pain Or Discomfort In Your Shoulder?

What is Rotator Cuff Strain?

Your shoulder is a joint that works like a ball and socket. The large muscles around your shoulder move your arm, while a smaller group of four muscles hold the joint in place. This smaller muscle group and their tendons are called your “rotator cuff.” Rotator cuffs are susceptible to strains and tears, which are the leading cause of shoulder injuries.

Common among athletes and laborers, rotator cuff strains can affect anyone who makes repetitive overhead motions. We call this type of strain an “impingement.” Impingements usually develop slowly over time and left untreated, the dysfunction may continue, even after the pain has resolved.

Tears can occur after an acute injury, such as falling, lifting, throwing or from repetitive use over time. You can have different levels of injury from microscopic tearing which heals very quickly, to a partial tear or a complete tear where the tissue has pulled apart. These tears are less common but potentially more painful.

Recognizing the Symptoms of Rotator Cuff Injuries

As a chronic condition, rotator cuff strains usually develop slowly over time. You may only experience discomfort after the tear increases in size.

Take note if you are experiencing the following symptoms:

Chronic Strains:

  • Pain in the front and outside of your shoulder

  • Pain extends down the length of your arm

  • Pain worsens at night

Acute Injuries:

  • “Tearing” or “snapping” sensation after a sudden injury

  • Severe pain and weakness
