Vertigo

Are You Suffering From A Dizzy Sensation That Doesn’t Go Away?

What is Vertigo?

Remarkably, our brains determine balance by combining visual information with input from tiny sensors within our inner ears and the joints of our upper neck. A malfunction anywhere within this complex system can disrupt our sense of balance.

When you tilt your head to the side, the sensors in your neck feel the change in pressure and report this information to your brain as a new position. Ordinarily, your brain cross – checks this stimuli with the other sensory cues and you maintain balance without even noticing it. When the nerves of your neck are stressed, however, they become triggered and “tell” your brain inaccurate information. The resulting dizziness is called cervicogenic vertigo and it can be quite uncomfortable.

Cervicogenic vertigo is typically caused when neck muscles are too tight or when the joints of the neck are out of alignment or not moving properly. Other conditions can contribute to vertigo, such as joint swelling, disc bulges and arthritis. It can also occur after sustaining an injury to your neck, such as whiplash.

Recognizing the Symptoms of Vertigo

Take note if you are experiencing the following symptoms:

  • Dizziness

  • Light-headedness

  • Floating sensation

  • Unsteadiness or imbalance

  • Spinning sensation (in extreme cases)

  • Vertigo is sometimes accompanied by headache at the base of the skull.

If you are experiencing these symptoms, we recommend you come in for a consultation. Make an appointment online anytime.

It is important to rule out other causes of your dizziness. Tell your doctor if you’ve recently changed medication, had any head injuries, experienced visual disturbances or drooping of one side of the face, fever, or numbness/tingling in your face or arms.
