How are kids and teens affected by back pain?
Back pain is not very common among young people. Children’s bodies are lighter and more flexible than adults, and they are less likely to endure the same stresses that cause pain in adults. If a child is experiencing back pain, he or she should be physically evaluated to understand why.
Typically, back pain among children is the result of an acute injury related to sports or rough play. Repetitive use injuries are often linked to activities such as gymnastics, cheerleading, and dancing. To avoid re-injury, the child should be advised on building and maintaining physical conditioning.
One should not wait until back pain develops to take proactive steps towards health. Children should be taught how their posture affects the stresses placed upon their bodies. Unevenly worn footwear and even their stance while sitting can play a role in the health of their spines. Pay attention to how your child wears his or her backpack. It should not be worn over one shoulder, sagging below the waist, or over-filled to the point of being difficult to carry.
Increasingly, handheld devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops are contributing to injuries in the neck and spine. Discourage using them for prolonged periods or in positions that strain the neck.
Scoliosis is another cause of back pain among children. While the condition cannot be cured, chiropractic techniques can reduce its symptoms and relieve pain. At Irondequoit Chiropractic, we specialize in the precise and careful treatment of scoliosis.

Joint or muscle stiffness, inability to move
Pain spreads throughout the body
Pain symptoms vary from person to person and can change over time. Identifying the root cause of the pain is key to any treatment plan.
