Nerve Pain/Radiculopathy

Noticing Numbness Or Tingling In Your Hand Or Foot?

What is Nerve Pain

When you stub your toe or hit your head, those bursts of pain are your brain’s way of saying to be more careful. But sometimes, we hurt for reasons that are less obvious. When a nerve is Injured or being pinched on it can disrupt the pain signal’s transmission. Neuropathic pain refers to pain signals that remain in the on or off mode for too long.

What we call a “pinched nerve” is really nerve entrapment syndrome. A classic example of nerve entrapment is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Overuse and awkward placement of the wrist can irritate the tissue around the carpal tunnel, which houses the median nerve. The resulting swelling compresses the nerve and leads to pain and stiffness.

A pinched nerve in your back or neck may be the result of a herniated disc.

Recognizing the Symptoms of Nerve Pain

Take note if you are experiencing the following symptoms:

  • Numbness, weakness, or tingling

  • Stabbing or burning sensation

  • “Pins and needles;” the sense your foot or hand has fallen asleep

  • Pain spreading throughout arms or legs

  • Symptoms may vary depending on the location of the pinched nerve. Nerve entrapment pain typically develops gradually over a longer period of time.
